BELLA MOSS FOUNDATION
The Bella Moss Foundation is concerned with combating the growing threat to companion animals from MRSA and other serious infections. Jill Moss started the Foundation after he pet, Bella, a 10-year-old Samoyed, died in 2004 from the effects of MRSA and pseudomonas infections following cruciate ligament surgery. When Jill found how little information there was on MRSA, she decided that no pet owner should find themselves in the same state of ignorance as she had been, and so she began the Foundation to make sure that other people could get the information they needed. The Foundation now also works with the veterinary profession. Leading veterinary clinicians and researchers help Jill make sure that accurate information is available to pet owners, and veterinary organisations are involved with the Foundation in developing programmes of professional development for vets and vet nurses. The Foundation was co-host, with the University of Liverpool, of the 1stInternational Conference on MRSA in Animals, the first UK event to bring the world´s leading authorities together to discuss how MRSA should be tackled, and Jill is a member of the Defra MRSA sub-committee that advises on government policy. The Foundation is grateful to the many publications and journalists who have supported its work, and the volunteers who have done so much to promote what the Foundation does.In particular thanks are given to Professor David Lloyd of the Royal Veterinary College who has been an important source of advice and support. www.thebellamossfoundation.com

PASSPORTS FOR PETS
Passports for Pets was formed in 1994 to press for change in the UK´s outdated system which imposed quarantine on all pet dogs and cats entering the country. Our argument was based on scientific evidence - the modern rabies vaccine had made reform possible, and in February 2000 the first correctly prepared pet cats and dogs were admitted. Many more countries have now been accepted into the scheme. We continue to have regular contact with DEFRA and await with immense interest the publication of their Review of Rabies Policy. We are also pressing for a reduction in the six month wait from the blood test to entry to the UK and for revision of the compulsory treatment for ticks and worms each time a pet enters the country. To date over 370,000 pet dogs and cats have entered the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme with not one case of rabies detected in the country other than in bats. We shall continue to monitor the operation of the Pet Travel Scheme and to press for further improvements including revised arrangements which will enable UK Search and Rescue dogs to return from their life saving missions abroad to the UK without 6 months quarantine. homepage.virgin.net/passports.forpets

THE DONKEY SANCTUARY
The Donkey Sanctuary was founded by Dr Elisabeth D Svendsen, MBE in 1969 and was registered as a charity in 1973. Its aims are to prevent the suffering of donkeys worldwide through the provision of high quality, professional advice, training and support on donkey welfare. In the UK and Ireland permanent sanctuary is provided to any donkey in need of refuge. No donkey is ever refused admission to the Sanctuary and each donkey is guaranteed a life of loving care. The charity never buys or sells donkeys, and it has a non-breeding policy. The Donkey Sanctuary’s overseas projects in Mexico, Ethiopia, India, Egypt and Kenya help hundreds of working donkeys every day, providing free veterinary treatment and giving advice to the owners who are dependent on their animals. In the last few years a sanctuary has also been established near Malaga in Spain. The Donkey Sanctuary depends entirely on donations from its supports in order to continue with its vital work worldwide. Only 6-pence in every £1 donated is spent on administrative costs, which means that the majority of all donations received goes directly to helping the donkeys. The Donkey Sanctuary has a sister charity, The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys, whose aims and objects are to provide therapeutic donkey riding to children with special needs throughout the UK. So far this charity has four Centres – in Sidmouth, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. A site for a fifth Centre is presently being sought.
THE KENNEL CLUB
The Kennel Club is the recognised national authority on ownership and welfare of dogs. Since its foundation in 1873, it has promoted the welfare of dogs and responsible dog ownership, and represents the interests of responsible owners. Its rules and regulations are the authority on dog breeds and breeding standards. The main aim of the Kennel Club is to promote, in every way, the general improvement of dogs. This is achieved through various initiatives such as the registration of dogs and associated canine societies, the licensing of more than 5,000 shows, trials and competitions annually and the promotion of responsible dog ownership. Through its Charitable Trust, the Kennel Club funds canine health research projects and supports canine charities. Crufts, the world’s largest dog show, is organized by the Kennel Club, as is Discover Dogs, an annual event designed to promote choice, care and training. The KC’s remit has been extended in recent years to become more wide ranging, and is ‘to promote the dog’s varied role in society’.
THE LEAGUE AGAINST CRUEL SPORTS (LACS)
The League Against Cruel Sports campaigns to end all cruel sports which result in the suffering and death of animals. We campaign on both local and national levels in order to raise awareness and gain public support for our campaigns, and ultimately to bring about an end to such cruelty through legislation. The League was at the forefront of the campaign which led to the abolition of hunting and coursing in England and Wales, a tremendous achievement for animal welfare in this country. We will continue to monitor the implementation of the ban in order to ensure that the law is not ignored, and will step up our campaign against hunting in Ireland. This ban means that the League can now concentrate more resources on other cruel sports. These include the shooting of animals and birds for sport and associated practices such as the use of snares and traps which kill inhumanely and indiscriminately, and the suffering inflicted on racing greyhounds, before, during and after their working lives. The League works in a number of different ways to achieve its aims: through the media, educating and research, political lobbying, campaign events and special investigations, including others. We have a team of supports groups throughout the UK, whose assistance to our campaigns is invaluable. www.league.uk.com
